Protection of peri-urban groundwater catchments: a multi-tracer approach for the identification of urban pollution sources

Abstract. Groundwater catchment located in peri-urban areas may be impacted by many pollutants coming from different types of point or diffuse sources such as accidental spills, continuous hidden leaks drainage networks, old landfills, treated/untreated wastewater and watercourses. In the scope CASPER project, a new methodological approach has been developed based on field survey interpretation collected data order to distinguish between contamination mixtures pollutants. First, groundwater area corresponding land surface perimeter which abstracted is recharged determined characterised hydrogeological terms. The possible pollution are identified. second step, water monitoring established, samples focusing combination physicochemical parameters set various hydrochemical indicators. particular, stable isotopes considered. NO3- Boron used inputs linked urban effluents, agricultural fertilisers manure. Stable SO42- sulphide minerals oxidation, sulphur-carbon compounds mineralisation, lixiviation human pollution. Moreover, occurrence specific molecules like pharmaceutical lifestyle products (carbamazepine, caffeine, etc.) effective tracers anthropogenic contamination. Microbiological analyses also undertaken identify microbial populations associated with biochemical reactions occurring soil groundwater. resulting dataset then processed using multivariate clustering analyses. this context, objective here describe rigorous assess illustrate first steps process case study chalk aquifer Western Belgium.
